- Computerization in Health has been influenced by emerging computing technologies encompassing new paradigms in both hardware and software. As an example of that scenario, we present the application of techniques for the processing of medical images, allowing more accurate diagnoses and more appropriate therapeutic planning. The result of the processing of such images can also be used as a starting point for the computer simulation of medical procedures. Examples include the numerical simulation of phenomena related to blood flow inside the arteries of a specific patient (making possible, for example, the planning of surgical procedures) and computer simulation of the interaction between the transport, diffusion and reaction processes of substances in the surrounding tissues and organs (which allows a better understanding of various physiological and pathological aspects related to the blood flow of a given patient). Such simulations require high performance computing resources so as to reach the result after a reasonable period of time. Correspondingly, for these simulations, it is necessary to use techniques of computer graphics (visualization) to process, segment and reconstruct patterns and phenomena of medical interest.
